The Newton Police Department believes that sharing information about criminal activity and the efforts of the Department helps to build trust and accountability. The purpose of providing this information is to help educate the public on police activity in the Town of Newton. However, while this transparency is important, we also know the paramount importance of shielding victims' privacy. For this reason, you will not see specific addresses listed on the Crime Reports map and offenses involving domestic violence are not displayed. The website lists addresses where police activity occurs by rounding to the block level. For example, the address of 39 Trinity Street would appear on the map as the 1 block of Trinity Street.

The following table provides an example of the block translation process:

Through providing this information to the public, the Police Department is hoping to enhance our partnership with the community. Recognizing the role that the public plays in both preventing criminal activity and solving crimes, the Department is asking the public to provide the Department with any information that would assist the Department in its mission. There is a link on each of the mapped incidents to send a tip to the Police Department in an email. We encourage input from the public through email, stopping by Police Headquarters or simply by calling the Department directly at (973) 383-2525.

While sharing this information should prove to increase the public's understanding and awareness, the Police Department strongly cautions that under no circumstances should any member of the public take any action on their own behalf as it relates to the information provided on this website, other than notifying the Newton Police Department with information they wish to share.

The information contained in the map is updated daily from the Police Department records management system except for information about Registered Sex Offenders. In accordance with law, the Police Department does not release information about registered sex offenders without specific authorization. The information contained in the website is obtained from other public databases such as the NJ Sex Offender Internet Registry as well other states' registries.

Residents are urged to consider signing up for Citizen Crime Alerts through the website. The Police Department also provides valuable information to the public through social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. Members of the public can also subscribe to Newton PD's Google Group where our press releases are distributed and stored online.
