Traffic Safety and Planning

The Traffic Bureau monitors traffic patterns and works with the Department of Transportation to find solutions to improve safety and traffic flow. The Traffic Bureau investigates all serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents. Additionally, the Traffic Bureau drafts ordinances for traffic related purposes such as stop streets, yield intersections, parking, etc.

All traffic signs are maintained by the Traffic Bureau and are added or replaced as needed. If you believe there is a need for a particular sign in an area within the Town of Newton you are urged to contact the Traffic Bureau for investigation and consideration. Traffic Safety Trailer

The Newton Police Department utilizes a Traffic Safety Trailer to enhance motorist and pedestrian safety throughout town. The trailer performs several functions such as alerting motorists to their speed as they pass by or displaying informational messages regarding construction, road closures, or other hazards. It can also gather traffic data such as vehicular volume and average speed which are helpful in determining areas where additional traffic safety measures may be needed.

The trailer will be maintained by the department’s Traffic Division, and deployed in areas of town identified as problematic for excessive speed. As always, town residents are encouraged to contact the police department to help bring to light problems in the community.
